The Small Improvements Pop-Up Office

What to do when four remote employees get together with our Berlin developers in San Francisco? Take to the beach with the ol’ pop-up office, of course!

It takes breaking out of that routine to really appreciate this unique working environment that we enjoy. With one of our engineers visiting from our head office in Berlin, we decided to take our mobile office to the road.

In true German style, we took the comforts of our 1985 VW Westfalia through Golden Gate Park and comfortably worked on the sandy slopes of Ocean Beach. Driving through the park along John F Kennedy Drive we passed a gushing waterfall, the blooming SF Botanical Gardens, a paddock full of Buffalo and a (still functioning) Dutch fashioned Windmill!

It took no more than 15 minutes, before we had our wifi signal up, bean bags in check, hot tea brewing and a little classical jazz melodically setting the tone. After a few minutes of brainstorming, we were disturbed by a spray of water coming out of the ocean in the distance. Looking closer, we realized there was a whale popping up through the waves, swimming its way north! Our pictures hardly do justice but it was a rare and exciting sight to behold!

To our surprise, a curious, potential new customer, who we’d just had a call with that morning, came by and enjoyed a cup of coffee with us! She works the remote life as well and we had a good chat about her early impressions of our tool and our impressive start-up culture.

All up, the experience was wonderful. It was incredible to be able to work alongside each other in such a beautiful and unique location. We had uninterrupted time to hack away ideas, talk processes, brainstorm and work through problems. So much fun, in fact, that we’re already planning another “pop-up” office for next week!
