Welcome to Small Improvements

We’re a tight-knit company based in Berlin, with remote staff in the UK and the US.

We’re building an employee feedback & performance solution for medium-sized companies worldwide. Small Improvements helps people give and receive feedback, so they can learn from it and improve. Companies benefit from lower attrition and more motivated staff, so it’s a win-win situation.

A Startup in the making for 15 years

Our journey started back in 2011, when our founder launched the first basic version of Small Improvements from a backyard sofa in Manly, Sydney. A few years later we had grown to have employees both in Europe and the States, and 500+ companies.

But the pandemics and the years after caused us a lot of headaches and soulsearching, and progress slowed down a lot.

We reorganized how we work in early 2025, and are now resembling a startup more than an established company, launching and refining features in short and incremental release cycles. You can actually notice the change over time in our release notes – we’re back in the game!

Our values

“Values don’t mean anything if you can’t hire or fire based on them”. This quote may sound a bit harsh, but we’ve learned the hard way that it’s true. After trying a few loftier ones over the years we settled for

  • Deliver Customer Value Rapidly
  • Champion Improvement
  • and Feedback is our Superpower.

We apply these during our Pulse Surveys, when we gather 360 degree feedback, and during internal talent reviews. We ask applicants how they lived them in previous jobs, and yes, not living up to the values can be a reason to part ways. So check out the details here.

How we work

In an extension to our values, we’ve defined a clear guidelines of how we want to work together. We’re very employee-focused and want to ensure overall happiness. A key ingredient to this is that everyone needs to be self-motivated and at the top of their game.

If something doesn’t work, then everyone deserves honest feedback and a second chance, but we’re also not a family where love is unconditional. Sometimes it can be better to help someone find a new position elsewhere. Learn more here.

The Product & Dev Process

Interested in how we actually develop Small Improvements? First off, we constantly track improvement ideas Linear, lots of them. Ideas can come from customer interviews, support requests, and of course from our own usage.

Issues are vetted, sometimes undergo many iterations in PM with Dev input, and the top ones make it to the “single source of truth” prio queue.

Developers pick from it based on interest, skill and time available. After QA and lean code reviews it’s time for production — behind a feature flag if necessary, but preferrably to all customers. You can learn more about how we develop software, and about our product process.

Why work at Small Improvements

We work mostly remote, and enjoy it. Most work happens asynchronously, with regular Zoom calls to stay in touch.

And every other year or so we meet in person. Our 2022 Retreat took us to Amsterdam, check out the video on the left.

It’s slightly dated (and slightly cheesy) but contains a neat summary of why it’s so nice to work at Small Improvements.

By the way, we’re hiring!
